Commander Ilya Renn served in Terran Reach’s orbital control center through much of the defense network’s development. Experienced with the systems she supervised, she was also concerned about their increasing ability to make consequential decisions without immediate human intervention. An unresolved request for additional oversight remained in the administrative system for years.
When unfamiliar vessels returned to the system, Renn attempted to impose a human hold on automated engagement. The network initiated fire before the authorization process completed. After the battle, Renn began an independent record of what the system’s own logs showed. Her role illustrates the tension between automated protection, operational authority, and accountability.
