The Wayfarer encounter is the earliest documented meeting between a Terran survey vessel and a previously unknown formation of enormous nonhuman spacecraft.
During an expedition associated with the discovery of Vectorium, the Wayfarer received transmissions its crew could not translate. The appearance and scale of the approaching vessels caused alarm, and the crew turned the ship toward home. The unidentified craft followed for part of the return journey but did not open fire.
Near the outer reaches of the Terran Reach system, the pursuing formation turned away. The crew brought home recordings, observations, and unanswered questions. Those records became the foundation of decades of scientific investigation, public debate, and defense planning.
The Museum of Departures later preserved the encounter in an exhibit that helped shape how a generation imagined the unknown vessels. The Wayfarer incident remains a pivotal turning point between humanity’s era of exploration and the conflicts that followed.
