The Wayfarer was a chartered Terran survey vessel associated with the discovery of Vectorium and humanity’s first documented encounter with enormous unidentified nonhuman spacecraft. Its mission was exploratory rather than military.
The crew recorded unusual physical phenomena during their work, then received transmissions they could not interpret when unfamiliar vessels appeared. The Wayfarer turned toward Terran Reach and was followed for part of its return. The pursuers did not fire and eventually withdrew. Records brought home aboard the vessel profoundly influenced Terran scientific research and defense planning.
The ship is associated with a Terran exploration-class design; its complete technical specification and full crew roster should not be inferred from the named individuals appearing in the Chronicles.
