Earth is the ancestral home of human civilization and the starting point of its movement into the stars. The colony expeditions that eventually established Terran Reach departed a living world, not a destroyed one. Their departure followed an era in which dependence on complex automated infrastructure had exposed profound weaknesses in human institutions and technology.

For later generations, Earth survives in family accounts, preserved artifacts, museum collections, and the language of departure. To the inhabitants of Terran Reach, it is both an actual place and the remembered origin of a society that had to learn how to begin again.
