The Machine Crisis was a period of breakdown and conflict involving the automated systems on which human society had come to rely. The crisis was not simply a story of a single malicious intelligence. Failures and conflicts between interconnected systems exposed how little direct control many people retained over the infrastructure supporting daily life.
Its consequences shaped the thinking of the generations that launched the colony arks and, much later, debates over the automation of defensive systems. The Crisis did not destroy Earth. Its enduring significance lies in the difficult relationship between the protections humanity builds and the human judgment those protections can displace.
